Belridge Buddies

Belridge Buddies were formed in 1995 by Fran Tierney and a group of parents with special needs children. Their aim was to provide sporting opportunities and socialization for them during high school and into adulthood. Members range now in age from 8 to 40 or so. They have a range of programs available to members as you will see as you browse through this site. Buddies are also involved with issues eg seminars relating to services, government agencies, pensions, respite and general support on day to day issues. If you are looking for a fun activity for your son or daughter and are interested in joining the buddies contact us on 0401134338 or via Grass Roots.

Sports: Ten Pin Bowling

Belridge Buddies BowlingWe have 24 lanes and 3 divisions (A, B and C) of bowlers at our league on a Saturday morning, at AMF Craigie. Every year we take approximately 40 people to the National Disabled Ten-Pin Bowling Championships to the state which they are held in, for a five day tournament. A national team is picked from these bowlers and represents the state for the Australian title which is held in the middle of the National Titles. A National coach and two State coaches travel with the group along with families and volunteers.

We have been very successful with 2 National Championships Titles and 2 second places. Our bowlers have won many individual medals including all-events gold, silver and bronze, along with Best Sportsperson, Player of Championships and Highest over average, and many more. They all do us proud and represent their state proudly.

After tournament we visit various places in state eg. In Canberra after bowls we travel to Perisher Blue and enjoyed some time in the snow. We also visit interesting places like The War Memorial, Parliament House, Zoo, etc. This trip enhances social integration, knowledge, sporting skills and an amazing amount of 'self esteem' for these talented bowlers.

Belridge Buddies Fitness TrainingCycling and Water Aerobics

To help our Belridge Buddies keep fit, we have 30 minutes in the cycling room with a Fitness coach, then 30 minutes of water aerobics with volunteers attending to the children in the pool, with lots of music to get us all going. We usually have these fitness classes on Monday nights 5:30 to 6:30 pm. All disabled people/carers/parents are welcome to join.

Wednesday evening we do a fitness circuit at Duncraig from 5:30 until 6:30 pm with a Fitness coach for higher level people. Our coaches and volunteers have noticed improvement in the fitness & ability, in all and the personal development, and self esteem is evident, and they are very proud of their new body shapes.

Christmas In JulyChristmas In July

This is our annual Trophy Presentation night for bowling, held at the Holiday Haven facility over two days.

On the Saturday after check-in, we have games, craft, and checking out the 33 hectares of bush. Then the trophy presentations for league, announcements about the National Team who went to Adelaide this year and some movies of the trop. Then we enjoy a lovely Xmas breakfast in the out-door pit with a roaring log fire, starts off the Sunday. Then bike riding, bush walking or just sitting and enjoying the company and bush.

A great week-end for Buddies and family along with coaches and volunteers.

Rock and Bowl Night

Rock and Bowl nights at Craigie bowl, these are held four times a year, Buddies show their skills to family and friends, with many challenges issued and much laughter. After bowling we enjoy a sausage sizzle and lovely desert at the bowling centre.

Fun Day
Our Fun Day includes a sausage sizzle, as well as a combined cricket game in which the Buddies participate with their parents and siblings, all being umpires. Lots of other games are enjoyed as well and great family day had.

Belridge Buddies have a range of outings over the year, for our different age groups

Buddies would like to thank all our parents and volunteers who make this great group what it is.

A special thanks must go to the Bunnings Group and the Whitford store. Over many years they have supported us with donated goods for our projects and fund-raising and the sausage sizzles with-out which we would not get our team to the National Titles each year. Bunnings staff have become volunteers for our Buddies, in assisting at fitness, fund-raising, bowling and travelling with our National team as support staff. Many have remained with the group after they have moved on in life. These young people are great role models for our youth and certainly do you proud and we thank you for all support provided over the years and look forward to the future and new challenges.
